Pregnancy is the fertilization and maturity of one or more progeny which is known as embryo, in the uterus of a woman. It is grouped into three trimesters and a normal pregnancy lasts for 40 weeks.

Three Trimesters (along with weeks and conditions):

  1. First Trimester is from fertilization to week 12:
        In this Trimester you may notice-
    • Excessive tiredness
    • Tender and inflated breasts
    • Upset stomach with or without throwing up
    • Cravings or distaste for certain foods
    • Mood swings
    • Constipation
    • Need to pass urine more often
    • Headache
    • Heartburn
    • Weight gain or loss
  2. Second Trimester is from week 13 to week 28:
        In this Trimester you may notice-
    • Body aches or thigh pain
    • Stretch marks on your abdomen, breasts, thighs or buttocks
    • Darkening of the skin around your nipples
    • A line on the skin running from belly button to pubic hairline
    • Patches of darker skin
    • Numb or tingling hands
    • Itching on the abdomen, palms, and soles of the feet
    • Swelling of the ankles, fingers and face
  3. Third Trimester is from week 29 to week 40:
        In this Trimester you may notice-
    • Shortness of breath
    • Heartburn
    • Enlargement of the ankles, fingers, and face
    • Hemorrhoids
    • Tender breasts, which may seep out a dilute pre-milk
    • Your belly button may stick out
    • Trouble sleeping
    • The infant “dropping,” or moving lower in your abdomen
    • Contractions, a symptom of genuine or false labor

Tips to a healthy pregnancy:

  • Organize your antenatal care early in your pregnancy
  • Eat healthy
  • Be careful about food hygiene
  • Take folic acid supplements
  • Exercise habitually
  • Start doing pelvic floor exercises
  • Bound your alcohol intake
  • Cut back on caffeine
  • Stop smoking
  • Acquire some break

Diet for a Healthy Pregnancy:

  • Milk and dairy goods
  • Cereals, whole grains, dals, pulses and nuts
  • Vegetables and fruits
  • Meat, fish and poultry
  • Fluids
  • Fats and oils
