Multiple Myeloma

Multiple Myeloma is also known as plasma cell myeloma. It is a kind of cancer that starts in plasma cell, a sort of white blood cell. It is the most familiar type of plasma cell cancer.

Symptoms of multiple myeloma:

  1. Detected in blood or urine
  2. Bone pain M proteins
    • Excessive thirst
    • Frequent urination
    • Confusion
    • Constipation
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Abdominal pain
  3. Red and white blood cell and platelet levels getting reduced, he/she may experience:
    • Fatigue
    • Lethargy
    • Repeated infections
    • Easily bruised skin
    • Nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or other unusual bleeding
  4. In case of Kidney damage, the following symptoms are possible:
    • Extreme thirst
    • Extremely reduced urination
    • Swollen ankles
    • Breathlessness
    • Loss of appetite
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
  5. In case of Cord compression, The following symptoms are possible:
    • Tingling in the legs and feet
    • Numbness in the legs and feet
    • Weakness in the legs and feet
    • Urinary incontinence
    • Bowel incontinence
    • Problem in passing urine
    • Problem in passing stools

Complications of multiple myeloma:

  • Kidney failure
  • Susceptibility to infections
  • Bone problems
  • Anemia

Treatment of multiple myeloma:

Treatment of multiple myeloma is done by therapies that decrease the plasma cell population as well as signs and symptoms of this disease.
